Is your living room starting to remind of your grandmother’s house? It’s understandable. You get caught up with work, school, kids and everything else that life throws at you and you forget about the little things. If this sounds like you, then it’s definitely time to find your inner Martha Steward and spruce up your space. And you certainly don’t have to spend a lot of money if that’s why you’ve been avoiding it for so long. There are several inexpensive modifications that you can make that will definitely transform your space.

1. One of the simplest ways to update your living room is to get rid of all the clutter! Over the years, stuff can really pile up. If you want to utilize your living room for more than just a storage space, you’ll need to get rid of some stuff. It will really make all the difference in the world. You’ll be able to sit back and relax much easier if there’s space to do it. Just take a good look around the room. Do you have too many knickknacks taking up shelf space? Or maybe a few too many kids toys and art easels lying around? Sell them, store them or throw them away. It’s as simple as that.

2. A quick and pretty cheap way to completely transform your living room is to change the wall color. A simple paint job can really do the trick. If you’ve got old, outdated wallpaper, scrape it off! Keep your new color palette simple and basic, so it can go with any style and color of furniture. It will also prevent the room from becoming outdated again too quickly. Earthy colors like green and tan are great places to start, but it all depends on your personal preference. Just try to keep it relatively neutral.

3. Updating the furniture in your living room is a slightly more expensive way to modernize the look of your space. If your current furniture looks dingy or is covered in an outdated pattern, its time for a change. Buying new furniture can be extremely expensive, so you’ll have to be creative if you’re on a budget. Think outside of the box. One cheap way to update your couch is to purchase a duvet. Find something that isn’t too flashy. Keep it pretty neutral like your walls and then add some fabulous pillows. You can also check out your local thrift stores for some excellent side pieces. Avoid anything that’s too trendy.

4. Most of us aren’t lucky enough to have hardwood floors. And the age of your carpet is often hard to hide, especially if you’ve had the same carpet for last 10 years. Replacing your carpet is often incredibly expensive and if you simply can’t afford it, purchasing a large area rug is a great way to update the look of a room. Pick an area rug that will work well with your current furniture. As long as the colors and size are chosen well, it will be a great way to truly define the space.

Remember to keep things neutral and basic. It’s the simplest way for you keep your space looking modern for years to come. This is especially true for your more expensive purchases. You want them to be timeless so they can mix and match well with whatever the current trends are.
