Boxing Sept 19th

When asking someone their name in Spanish, what you say all depends on who you are talking to, and whether they are familiar to you or not. The friendly and casual way to ask, is to say “como te llamas”? This is used with your peers and is informal. If you wish to be polite and show respect you would say “como se llama”? Which means the same thing but is said when you are meeting someone for the first time.

Now, if someone were to ask you “como te llamas”? Would you know how to answer?

Well, in reply to this question, you would say “me llamo”, the literal translation being “I call myself” not “my name is”.

How do you say Spanish phrases – stay away from literal translations.

Considering the fact that you are at such an early stage of learning Spanish, it would be best if you were to learn each sentence individually, at least until you get used to the formatting of the Spanish language, which can be very awkward when you are used to the English way of saying things.

How do you say Spanish – Another awkward example;

Where are you from?

De donde eres? – From = de – where = donde – you are/are you = eres. Here you will notice things are beginning to get a little mixed up.

Even this simple question can be asked formally and informally, just to add to the confusion.

De donde eres? = Casual.

De donde es usted? = Respectful.

Your answer is Soy de – California, Soy de – Estados Unidos/US, Soy de – Inglaterra/England.

If you are just beginning to learn Spanish, you will need a few words and phrases to let people know this, and to maybe slow them down a little.

Here are some useful phrases to practice.

  • No entiendo – I don’t understand.
  • No hablo espanol – I don’t speak Spanish.
  • No hablo espanol muy bien – I don’t speak Spanish very well.
  • Mas despacio por favor – Slow down a bit please.
  • Estoy aprendiendo – I am learning.
  • No se mucho – I don’t know much.
  • Hablo mejor ingles – I speak English better.
  • Solo hablo un poco Espanol- I only speak a little Spanish.
  • Hablas ingles? – Do you speak English? (casual)
  • Lo siento – I am sorry.

Well I think that will be enough for today.

Hasta luego!
