Boxing Rankings 2007

Boxing Capital recently had a chance to talk to talented Junior Middleweight, Yuri Foreman. This 28 year old currently has a perfect 26-0 (8 KO’s) record and is highly respected within the boxing industry, as well as being rated by all of the major governing bodies. The latest rankings had Yuri positioned as follows:

WBA No. 4 – Champion Daniel Santos (Puerto Rico)

IBF No. 6 – Champion Verno Phillips (USA) who defends against Paul Williams on November 29th.

WBC No. 8 – Champion Vernon Forrest (USA)

WBO No. 11 – Champion Sergei Dzindziruk

So it would seem that a World Title shot is not too far away for Yuri. However, there can be no slip ups at this stage and next up for Foreman is a bout on 13th December 2008 against Irishman James Moore (16-1, 10 KO’s) at the famous Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Foreman will be defending his NABF Junior Middleweight Title for the second time.

BOXING CAPITAL: You started your life in Belarus, before moving to Israel and later New York. I imagine that it’s been quite a journey – when did you first start boxing and what was it about the sport that kept you coming back to the gym?

YURI FOREMAN: Well life is the journey! I was born in Belarus and when I was 7 my parents sent me to the swimming pool (since every child in the Soviet Union had to do sport). So one day I had been bullied by few older kids in the pool and I came home crying with bruises on my face. Then, my mom took me to the Boxing gym. At age of 7, boxing was for me, a self defense. When i got a little older, boxing for me was a more than defense alone , it was more a way of life and I was fasinated by it. I realised at young age that I wanted to be a World Champion.

BC: You had an incredibly successful amateur career, compiling an impressive record of 75-5. What do you rate as your biggest achievement in the amateur game?

YF: Well growing in the Israel, my biggest achievement was that I represented Israel in the biggest international competitions .

BC: When you moved to New York was the reason behind this solely to further your boxing career?

YF: I moved to New York in 1999. I made my decision that I wanted to progress in my boxing career and the place for that is the Mecca of boxing, NYC. I told my Dad about it and he was on my side and supported my decision.

BC: Having followed your progress, we’ve seen you develop into a rounded pro in compiling your current 26-0 record. Who have been the biggest influences in your professional career?

YF: I always loved to watch Mike Tyson when I was younger. Then, when I moved here (to New York) I became influenced by fighters like Kostya Tszyu, Bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe.

BC: What has been your best win as a pro and why?

YF: I think when I fought Andrey Tsurkan (to win the NABF Title in December 2007- Foreman won a split decision) ; first it was very tough fight. I also had to overcome a deep cut over my eye and constant pressure from Tsurkan. Plus, the victory in this fight got me to a higher level.

BC: Next up for you is a clash with Irishman, James Moore, in Atlantic City on December 13th? How are your preparations for the fight going and how much do you know about your opponent?

YF: I know James very well as we train in the same gym, as a matter of fact we are good pals. All that a side, I know he is very tough fighter with a lots of heart and puts lots of pressure.

BC: You currently have high rankings with a number of the sanctioning bodies, how long do you think it will be until you are challenging for a world title?

YF: If that was up to me I’d do it already.

BC: Who do you consider the current ‘main man’ in the jr. middleweight division?

YF: Pretty much anybody with a World Title belt around their waist.

BC: Much has been said of your Jewish faith and your studies to become a Rabbi, do you feel that your faith gives you an edge when you are boxing?

YF: In the ring Judaism helps me to stay focus and determent.

BC: We wish Yuri Foreman the best of luck in his quest to become World Champion and hope that he gets his opportunity early in 2009!
