Boxing Great Depression

More employees than ever before are facing depression and stress related conditions due to the recession, both in their work place and personal lives.
What is the responsibility of an employer in this situation?  These conditions cannot help but cross over between place of work and home.
And whilst it is encouraging to hear that the Government is to allocate additional funding for depression in this recession with counselling centres across the UK, -  how can employers assist and at the same time, ensure they protect their businesses?
This Government plan is to take the form of support for therapy services, to identify and help those in employment and financial difficulties whether they are still in work, job seeking or on the return to work.
This is welcome, but may not even crack the proverbial tip of the iceberg.  Whilst many suffer from stress from time to time, it is constant and long standing and severe stress which causes mental and physical illness and incapacity at work.
Lifestyles are complex, and where earnings fall and money troubles increase, all levels of people in all walks of life from those on the minimum wages to those with usually bumper bonuses suffer.
Employers are in the perfect position to notice their employee’s performance on a daily basis and take action in the interests of the employee, other employees, the clients and ultimately the business.
Jan Lofthouse, Head of Legal Services at Abbaye and Lloyd recommends “Keep a close eye on your staff, their motivation, their energy, attendance and time keeping, their standards of performance.  The well being of your staff is the well being of your clients and in turn the well being of your business.”
She advises:  “Should you not take this care, then low morale can be endemic, feeding under performance leading to a myriad of complaints.  Complaints from the employee concerned, complaints from other employees bearing additional strains to relieve those underperforming, complaints from clients, complaints from regulators.  Complaints can lead to legal action.  Legal action means expense, time and more stress.
Jan Lofthouse concludes: “The economic and legal implications from under performance are great.   Claims from clients for non delivery leading to litigation for breach of contract.  Losing clients.  Losing new business. Loss of authority, respect and reputation.
“Employers have a duty to their employees to insist they seek medical help, take time away from work.  Employers need to manage the work force and their work loads accordingly.”
To place additional stress on vulnerable employees, both those already suffering and those taking over work loads could ultimately lead to employee grievances, claims under employment legislation and personal injury claims.  These claims lead to additional expense, time and even more stress for those running the business.  It is a recurring cycle.  Break this cycle to minimize depression in the recession.

Walter Hill’s colorful directorial debut has quite a cult following for its toughness and violence; it may well be his best film, in fact. Charles Bronson plays a silent street fighter in New Orleans in the ’30s managed by the cool James Coburn. Jill Ireland, Strother Martin, and Michael McGuire costar in this spare existential Depression dirge. It owes a lot to its noir origins that Hill adore…
